Five philosophical opposites, and one of them turns out to be a trick question.
TL;DR: a straight line’s opposite is, apparently, obviously a curve, with Curve beating Point 54–8 (87%), the most lopsided call of the week by a wide margin. Fittingly, the closest race of the bunch was What’s the opposite of a question?. Answer edged Statement 34–31, essentially a coin flip. Turns out the opposite of a question is itself a genuinely open question.

What’s the opposite of a straight line? deserves one more look: 87% isn’t just this week’s best, it’s the third most decisive vote in the whole history of this poll, trailing only Ice Cream’s landslide over Frozen Yogurt and “cereal is not a soup.” Apparently the crowd has a much easier time agreeing on geometry than on breakfast.

A quiet week on the office-alignment front: HQ and RTP picked the exact same winner on all five questions, no gap comes close to significant (all p > 0.16), and the Alignment Index for this poll alone lands at 0.63, middle of the pack, nothing dramatic in either direction. The cumulative index holds steady at 0.83, and the running flip tally stays put at 9. After the last two weeks’ fireworks (a record-low alignment, then a record-high one), this poll was the two offices just… agreeing.
Do the elemental opposites travel together?
Two of these questions reach for a physical extreme rather than a strict negation: Water isn’t really the absence of fire, and Boiling isn’t the reverse of freezing so much as its temperature opposite. Let’s see how much the “go with the elemental extreme” crowd overlaps.
Of the 66 overlapping voters, somewhere between 18 and 41 (27%–62%) picked both Water and Boiling, versus about 27 (41%) expected if the two choices were unrelated. Both options were comfortable majorities on their own, so there’s a solid floor under the “opposites are extremes, not negations” school of thought in this office. Melting and “no fire” just didn’t have the same pull.
